The Code of Criminal Procedure commonly called the Criminal Procedure Code is the main legislation on procedure for administration of substantive criminal law in India. It was enacted in 1973 and came into force on 1 April 1974.  Criminal procedure refers to the methods used to investigate and prosecute a crime. In addition, criminal procedure protects the rights of the defendant.
